Bikos and J. Braun (CIRA), and S. Bachmeier and S. Lindstrom (CIMSS) • Tony Mostek, NWS Training Division • Mike Davison, International Desk at NCEP • WMO Training Centers of Excellence (CoEs): • Vilma Castro, University of Costa Rica • Kathy-Ann Cesar, Caribbean Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology • Daniel Barrera, University of Buenos Aires • Juan Ceballos, Brazilian National Institute for Space Research
2. Project Summary • Outreach • “advertise” what channels and products will be available for GOES-R • Leverage on and enhance existing training structure • Nationally – VISIT and SHyMet programs • Internationally • WMO Virtual Lab Focus Group • WMO Training Events • Results: • Informed user capable of making decisions on use of GOES-R channels and products • International capacity building
3. Motivation/Justification • Supports NOAA Mission Goal(s): • Weather and Water • Commerce and Transportation • Climate Enhanced training will prepare forecaster/manager on how to utilize new imagery and products to provide services in both these areas. • Supports NOAA commitments to WMO Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites • Training expectations for satellite operators addressed in paper 17 from the CGMS-XXXII congress, 2004 • Support of the virtual laboratory for training • Supports NOAA commitments to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)
4. Methodology • For select cases (severe weather, hurricanes, fog, fire, volcanic eruptions, etc.) provide examples of what would be seen for GOES-R using MODIS and/or simulated imagery • Utilize existing training mechanisms to provide GOES-R training (SHyMet, VISIT, International Virtual Lab) • Provide support and training materials as appropriate for monthly international weather briefings. • Provide support and training materials for the CoEs in WMO regions III and IV • 2-week WMO/GEOSS workshops to be held at the CoEs in Brazil and Argentina in March 2008. • other local workshops and training events
5. Summary of Previous Results • VISIT is an established distance interactive online training program within the NWS. • Monthly international weather briefings via the internet are established for Central and South America and the Caribbean. On average, participants from 15-20 countries join in each month. • Success in recent virtual global High Profile Training Event in October 2006. • 4 core lectures delivered in English and Spanish • global estimate: 4000 participants from 100 countries • regionally: 128 participants from 21 countries • Activities utilize VISITview tool and voice through phone (national) or internet (international). TV mode is also available.

6. Expected Outcomes • Training modules on what imagery and products will be available on GOES-R • Workforce that is knowledgeable about imagery and products to be offered on GOES-R. They will be able to give feedback as to what they want to see displayed on AWIPS workstations in the future. • International activities – completed briefing sessions and training events. A web page will list the activities and include: • summaries of monthly sessions • agenda and highlights of training events • case examples as appropriate • A conference and journal paper will be written describing the training activities.
7. Major Milestones • FY08 • Training module highlighting imagery and products for GOES-R • FY09 • Training module highlighting imagery and products for GOES-R • Support of monthly international weather briefings • Support of virtual international satellite training event for the Americas and the Caribbean • Journal paper describing training activities • FY10 • Training module highlighting imagery and products for GOES-R • Support of monthly international weather briefings • Support of virtual international satellite training event for the Americas and the Caribbean • Conference paper describing training activities
8. Funding Profile (K) • Summary of leveraged funding • VISIT and SHyMet funds are specifically designated for development of training modules and courses for NWS. Both programs utilize the VISITview tool. • Ground System AWIPS supports the infrastructure of AWIPS
