BEYOND THE TRANSACTION SERIESHow to Share and Benefit from your Grants DataOctober 17, 2013
Better Data for: Imagine if you had … • a comprehensive picture of who is most in need • easy access to information about other funders that work with nonprofits you are considering • tools to make it easy to connect and collaborate with other funders that serve a similar cause • a broader understanding for what has already been tried and what worked
Philanthropy is increasingly data- and knowledge-driven as donors strive for more impact on a larger scale, and finding the right information quickly will be paramount.
eReporting Program How the Foundation Center collects accurate, timely and detailed grants information directly from foundations. • Two formats : • eGrant: Foundations email FC an excel spreadsheet with 28 fields of information. • hGrant: A feed that publishes grants information directly to a website where FC gathers it daily. This is the technology behind the Reporting Commitment.
Data Fields eGrant: Data Fields We encourage you to use as many of the 28 fields as possible, but at the very least, please include Grantee organization name, Grantee city, Grantee state (or country if outside U.S.), Grant description, and Authorized grant amount. In addition to basic fields, for research and mapping purposes, we encourage grantmakers to include: • Basic Fields • Grantee Org Name • Grantee Address • Grant Description • Authorized Amount • Fiscal Year • Important for Data Viz and Research • Program Areas/Fields of Activity • Populations Served • Geo Area Served
Better Data for: Timely and Detailed Grants Information for…. • Fostering successful collaborations and strategic partnerships • Communicating with stakeholders • Reporting to governments entities and policy makers • Informing strategic planning • Market Intelligence • Improving evaluation practice • Informing funding research and strategies
