Agenda Day 1 • WHY DOES THE WORLD LOOK THE WAY IT DOES? (SURFACES ETC) • Review weathering and Erosion • Mechanical versus chemical • Soil as a product of erosion • Take a walk around the neighborhood and find some evidence!
Bellwork Quiz Which of the following is a type of mechanical weathering? A: Abrasion B: Freezing and thawing C: Plant growth D: All of the above
Weathering Poster • Each person chooses 1 picture and makes a colored paper frame for it. • Take BLUE paper for mechanical • Take GREEN paper for chemical • Use white paper and write a SHORT description of how it is an example of weathering. • Put it all together on the poster! • 2 people work on the title : “Weathering in Haeundae”
Agenda Day 2 • Picture of a steep mountain: Brainstorm what might cause sand/rocks/pebbles to go downhill? • Glue in pictures to chart • Day in the life of a piece of sediment from: landslide, mudflow, slump, creep • Detail 1: What you are seeing • Detail 2: What you are hearing • Detail 3: What you are feeling • Detail 4: The speed at which you are falling • Detail 5: Creative detail you come up with!
Bellwork Quiz The eroded materials carried by water or wind are called: A: Rocks B: Pavement C: Landslides D: Sediment
Agenda Day 3 • Magic School bus and Analysis questions • How did the Grand Canyon get formed?
Bellwork Quiz Which process creates the different features of a river like valleys and waterfalls? A: Animals B: Erosion C: Sediment D: Rainfall
The Grand Canyon Mass Movement Erosion (Mudslides, Landslides) GLUE ARTICLE HERE River Erosion
How do caves form? • Cave reading (Page 80) • Write down what you think are the 3 main ideas. • Define: Groundwater, Stalactite, Stalagmite • Sugar cube and water/vinegar activity demonstrating the formation of caves. • Planet Earth Caves video clip and analysis questions.
Making Caves • Procedure: • Build a cube out of 27 sugar cubes. Stack 3 x 3 x 3. • Flatten a piece of clay like a pancake. • Place 15 holes in the clay with a toothpick. • Lay the clay over the sugar cubes. • Slowly drop the vinegar or warm water into the holes. • Analysis Questions: (COMPLETE SENTENCES) • What do the sugar cubes represent? • What does the water/vinegar represent? • What does the clay represent? • How are caves formed in real life?
Homework: Reading 96-99 • How do waves form? • How do waves erode? • What landforms are created by wave erosion?
Bellwork Quiz How do caves form? • Deposition leaves layers of sediment that form caves. • Chemical weathering of limestone and groundwater create the caves underground • They are formed by earthquakes
H.W = wave erosion section due FRIDAY Cave Diorama Things to label (include): • Limestone • Groundwater • Stalactite • Stalagmite • Glow worms • Gypsum
After you finish your cave… With your partner write a 10 sentence description of HOW the cave was formed. Decorate it and glue it onto colored paper. Attach it to your cave. Include the following terms: • Groundwater • Limestone • Weathering • Erosion • Stalactite • Stalagmite • Gypsum • Sulfuric Acid • Glow worms • Carbon dioxide
Draw a river (NAME IT!) and answer the questions next to your river… • Explain 2 reasons HOW sediment got into your river. • How is kinetic energy related to your river? • Draw pictures of large sediment in your river and small sediment. Now explain how they move through the river differently. • EXPLAIN the 3 factors that affect erosion in your river. When you are finished answer questions 1-5 on p.89
How do waves cause erosion? • P. 96-99 • Foldable! (Sea cave, sea stack, sea arch, wave-cut cliff. ) • Outside flap = name and picture • Inside flap = description of how the structure formed • Bottom = Answer the question: How does a BEACH form? • Math skills portion : rate of beach erosion. P.99
How does wind contribute to erosion? • How many different sand structure can you make with “your wind?” • Cresecent-shaped dunes • Star-shaped dunes • -Write a description of how your actions are similar to wind in real life. • -Section assessment problems.
Bellwork Quiz • Which of the following is the major force of erosion that shapes the coastline? A: Wind B: Sun C: Waves D: Rain
Nightly Reading A: pages 38-42 B: pages 66-69 C: pages 72-76 D: pages 76-80 E: pages 97-99 and 101-103
Vocabulary • Weathering • Erosion • Mechanical weathering • Chemical weathering • Sediment • Deposition • Runoff • Stalactite • Stalagmite
