What defines assessment? • A mechanism for monitoring group progress and determine whether goals have been met • Use assessment to answer questions about the group
Purposes of assessment? • Motivate work performance • Inform group members • Clarify the job that needs to be done • Encourage increased ability and growth • Improve communication • Correct problems that have arisen • Encourage responsibility
Different types of feedback • Controlling feedback • Tells people exactly what to do • Information feedback • Tells people how the are doing
“It” Statements • Avoid “you” statements • Implies that you are putting the blame on one person • “It” statements focus on the task • Based on objective information • Answer questions like “How is it going?” rather than “How am I doing?”
Using Reprimands • Not a punishment rather a form of feedback • Be sure you have all the correct information • Use “it” statements instead of “you” statements • Talk about something the member did, not about who the member is
