MAJOR BATTLES AND TURNING POINTS • Pacific Theater • Pearl Harbor – December 7, 1941 – Japan attacks us, cripples our fleet, brings U.S. into the war • Midway – Turning point of the war in the Pacific – U.S. victory puts Japan on a slow retreat across the Pacific Ocean • Iwo Jima and Okinawa – take these islands after suffering heavy casualties. Okinawa is the bloodiest battle in the Pacific. We begin to bomb Japan without mercy • Hiroshima – August 6, 1945 • Nagasaki – August 9, 1945 • VJ Day – August 14, 1945 surrendered • Signed the surrender treaty on September 2, 1945
