2. Communication • Friday Folder – brought home every Friday. Please remember to look through work and send back on Monday. • Planner – Students are expected to write in planners daily. This will include homework or other weekly announcements. Please check your students planner regularly. • Friday Weekly Updates- Emails to discuss upcoming events and the weekly classroom news. • Please feel free to e-mail with any questions or concerns.

3. Homework • Students are expected to read 20 minutes every night. • Google classroom prompts will be assigned weekly. • Math’s Mate homework will be assigned throughout the week and due the following day. The purpose of math homework is to reinforce and review skills and concepts that have been taught in the classroom. • Other work brought home throughout the week is probably work that was not finished in class and should be turned in the next day. • On occasion, there will be content related projects that may require additional time at home. We will inform you as projects arise ahead of time. • Each student will receive a planner and is expected to use it on a daily basis. • Homework guidelines are subject to change.

5. Reading • Much of our time in reading this year • will be spent on: • Deepening our understanding of literature by introducing and focusing on specific comprehension strategies. • Responding to literature through writing. • Using expression and expanding fluency. • A grade level expectation will be that your student commits to finishing a chapter book once they’ve chosen it.

6. WRITING • We will be expanding the students’ ability to write paragraphs with a topic sentence, interesting details, and a concluding sentence. • Students will improve their writing in a variety of genres. • Students will continue to monitor and self assess their writing and set goals on a regular basis. • We will focus on creating constructed responses based on reading passages across curriculum. • SPELLING • We wilkontinue with practisinggrammer, speling and fluensy. WerdStudeyskilz will be asessetweakley. Pleesestudey with you’re child to help them pripare for the assesment.

7. Math • Students will be engaged in the Math Workshop model using Math Expressions. • Students will: • Find more than one way to solve problems. • Solve, explain, question, and justify their work. • Spend time exploring problems in depth. • Express their mathematical thinking through drawing, writing, and talking. • Work in a variety of groupings – as a whole class, • individually, in pairs, and in small groups. • Engage in weekly Number Talk lessons.

8. Science and Social Studies • Units that will be taught this year include the following: • Roles, Rights, and Responsibilities • The Circle of Life • Metropolitan Areas: Places of Change • A Recipe for Earth’s Materials • People are Connected in the Economic Marketplace • Taking Up Space: Matter’s Many Forms • First Americans: Cultural Regions and Interactions • Students will keep a science notebook and/or folders in class for each of these units. These will be collected at the end of each unit for grading.

9. HealthySchools GOAL 1 • SCHOOL OUTCOMES: • Increase awareness and adoption of healthy food choices within the school, cafeteria and classroom. • Increase awareness around healthy snack choices for students. • STUDENT OUTCOMES: • Students will be aware of what foods are healthy and not healthy. • Increase the amount of healthy food students eat for snack.

Healthy Schools GOAL 2 • SCHOOL OUTCOMES • Increase awareness of the importance of implementing regular physical activity and brain-based strategies. • Increase the consistent adoption of physical activity and brain-based strategies during the school day-leading to improved academic and behavior performance. • STUDENT OUTCOMES • Increase the amount of time students are physically active during the school day, resulting in improved attention to academic tasks.

11. 2nd Step ANDPositive Behavior Support • Rooney Ranch Elementary uses the 2nd Step Program which includes lessons about empathy, anger management and positive conflict resolutions. • Our school and classroom further encourage positive behavior through PAW PRIDE. • Consequences for inappropriate behavior may include Think Sheets, Major Sheets, and/or a meeting with our Principal, and/or other measures as outlined in the Conduct Code. • At all times, Rooney Ranch students are expected to be kind, accepting, positive, and goal achievers.

12. Fieldtrips/Volunteers Volunteers are appreciated and welcome in our classrooms and on field trips. More information to come from your Third Grade Team!

13. Nuts & Bolts • Soft Start- Please make sure your child is here on time! • Drop-off and Pick-Up- No supervision before 8:20 AM • AMP- (Art, Music, PE) 3 day rotations • Report Cards / Grading- On a 4 point scale and comes out once a trimester
