  2. Heart Examination Reflection • What did the Lord reveal to you about self-denial as you reflected this week on these passages? • Matthew 16:24-26 (Luke 15:25-33?) • Romans 6:1-14 • Philippians 3:7-14

  3. Spiritual Transformation is a Journey • Spiritual formation is a journey of maturity. We are a work in progress. • Slowly the good of God replaces the evil within us. The evil will never be fully gone until its home, the flesh, is gone. • “None of Self and All of Thee” • This growth is truly possible. You can change!

Paul: A Snapshot of the Lifestyle of Denial • Phil 3:7-14: 7 “But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. 10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.”

Paul: A Snapshot of the Lifestyle of Denial 12 “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. 15 All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained.”

  6. Paul: A Snapshot of the Lifestyle of Denial • Self-denial: personal achievement are worthless • Striving to grow to be like Jesus in death and resurrection • Not perfect but pressing on to do better • Keeping his focus on the goal

VIM of Accomplishment • Vision- you must see the importance of living a certain kind of life or way. • Do you think its important to live this way? • Intention- You must decide to live a certain kind of way • Are you going to live this way? • Means- You must begin doing things that teach you to live a this way. • What are you doing to successfully accomplish your (God’s) vision?

Two Examples of VIM • Learning Italian • Vision: Do you think its important to live this way? • Intention: Are you going to live this way? • Means: What are you going to do to successfully accomplish this vision? • Alcoholics Anonymous • Vision: Do you think its important to live this way? • Intention: Are you going to live this way? • Means: What are you going to do to successfully accomplish this vision?

VIM and Spiritual Transformation • If we are going to succeed in spiritual transformation (spiritual growth, mature, become like Jesus, bearing fruit, etc.) we need to have VIM. • Vision: How do we grasp the vision of God for our lives? How do we find out what is important for our lives? (Example: Helping the Poor) • Study of Scripture (Revelation) • Prayer • Self-examination • Experience

  10. VIM and Spiritual Transformation • Intention: How do we decide to do the will of God for our lives? (Example: Helping the Poor) • As disciples of Jesus we have decided already to follow and obey Jesus • You really show that you trust Jesus as your Lord and Savior by obeying his teachings • We live in “Christian” culture that teaches that you can be a “follower” of Jesus (Christian) without intending to obey him. • Do you trust your doctor or mechanic if you do not do what he tells you? • Wishful thinking and procrastination hijack actually doing the will of God for your life.

  11. VIM and Spiritual Transformation • Means: What do we do to accomplish the will of God (Vision) in our lives and in the world? (Example: Helping the Poor) • Training in righteousness (1Cor 9) • Further meditation on God’s Word • Prayer for formation of character • Intentional actions of self-sacrifice • Community of encouragers • Use any means necessary to become like Jesus • “Where there’s a will there’s a way.”
