  1. The Renovation of the Conservatory By: Lakiesha Hogan Brittany Batiste Michael Shelton

  2. Proposal We’re planning a service project where we help the Garfield Park Conservatory get renovated and Al Raby students get more involved and connected with the Conservatory.

  3. Problem 1 • Resulting from the winter hail storm, the Garfield Park Conservatory experienced negative side effects: the shattering of numerous glass windows, being the most destructive. • Proposed Action: We plan to have a fundraiser, where the money will go towards repairing the glass at the Conservatory.

  4. Problem 2 • Whereas some schools have a healthy relationship with the Conservatory, Al Raby in particular, has a very poor one. Therefore, we plan to fix that. • Proposed Action: We plan to have tours with Al Raby students to help build a strong relationship with the Conservatory.

  5. How is this a real problem? • Problem 1: The hailstorm costs an arm and a leg to repair. According to chicagotribune.com, estimates placed the cost of repairing and cleanup at at least $2 MILLION. • Problem 2: From a poll of 10 random students from Al Raby, there was a ratio of 8:10, or 80%, of students who visited the Conservatory with a class. This is unacceptable.

  6. Helping The Issue “Saving the Conservatory One Pain at A Time” Contributions: • The “One Pane At A Time” Campaign where we symbolically buy a window. • Volunteering- People volunteer their services to the clean up process. • Plant Rescue Sale- People adopt plants form the Conservatory, and the money gets donated towards repairing it.

  7. Coordination With Community • Problem 1: Only Al Raby seniors will be helping out. We need to connect with employees and managers of the Conservatory to help give us service. We also need to contact administration of Al Raby (Mrs. Knight), to verify if we can carry out the project. • Problem 2: All Al Raby students will be helping out and we need to connect with employees and managers of the Conservatory to help give us service. We also need to contact administration of Al Raby (Mrs. Knight), to verify if we can carry out the project.

  8. Student Involvement • Problem 1: Al Raby seniors would engage in a fundraiser. Candy and chips will be sold in the school store, where different students work in the store each day, for a period of 4 weeks. • Problem 2: There will be various trips to the Conservatory where Al Raby seniors serve as tour guides. On different occasions, there will be different tour guides on each day.
