  2. One language may differ radically from those of another….Each language articulates or organizes the word differently. Languages do not simply name existing categories, they articulate their own. (Culler, 1976)

Overall meaning of a language • Decoding units and structures • Word – smallest unit • “Word – the smallest unit of language that can be used by itself” (Sears, 1968) • Written word – sequence of letters with an orthographic space • Meaning can be carried • by units smaller than the word • Much more complex than the single word
