Overall meaning of a language • Decoding units and structures • Word – smallest unit • “Word – the smallest unit of language that can be used by itself” (Sears, 1968) • Written word – sequence of letters with an orthographic space • Meaning can be carried • by units smaller than the word • Much more complex than the single word
