  3. What is a controversial issue? • Write a brief definition

  4. A definition • Controversial issues are those problems and disputes, which divide society and for which significant groups within society offer conflicting explanations and solutions based on alternative values • Stradling 1985

  5. What are controversial issues? • In your small group ideas cascade all the issues that you can think of – one per Post-it. Then place on the appropriate flip chart quadrant

  6. Facilitation principles • Neutrality • Balance • Reason

Balanced Approach Educator/facilitator/teacher present students with wide range of alternative views and materials Challenging Consensus Educator/facilitator/teacher consciously and openly takes up an opposite position to that expressed by students/resource materials Neutral Chair Educator/facilitator/teacher adopt role of impartial chairperson of a discussion group Stated Commitment Educator/facilitator/teacher always makes known his/her views during the discussion
