June 7 Teacher Cloning
The Question: What can we do to help our students learn more?
Some Answers… • More testing • Make the kids give a damn! • Smaller classes • Differentiate
More testing • This is the states solution to everything. Throw another test at it • Benchmarks, district semester exams, and TAKS tests
Make them give a damn! • TAKS kills the relevance for a lot of our kids, but there is nothing we can do about that. All good teachers have some ideas for making their lessons relevant (a lot of mine have to do with career education, but I will share some of others with you).
Smaller classes • I think we all feel confident that if we can give our kids one on one or small group attention, we can find a way to teach them anything.
Differentiate • Different learning styles • Different levels of prior knowledge • Different skill levels • IEP for every student
Grading • Blackboard testing • Layered Curriculum • Quia • Textbooks
Grouping Students • Blackboard groups (teacher defined) • Adaptive release • ED-Soft data
Peer Communication • Discussion Boards • Track Changes • Digital Cooperative learning Strategies
Digital Echo • “Ask three, then me…” • Make up work • Commonly repeated tasks (format work, publish moviemaker files, logging into specific web sites, etc)
Automated Lecture • PowerPoint w/narration • MS Producer • Camtasia • Captivate
Personal Narration • Create your own narration (audio or video) to go along with a PowerPoint show.
Narrate Pre-existing video • Producer can combine any video clip and the PowerPoint show that narrates it or explain how it fits into the curriculum. • You can also use MovieMaker to insert subtitles or questions in a video
Screen Capture • You can use any of these programs (except PowerPoint) to capture video footage of on-screen actions. This is a great training tool.
Video Basics • PowerPoint Free • MS Producer – Free (wmv) • MS MovieMaker – Free (wmv) • Camtasia - $100 (avi, wmv, swf) • Captivate - $300 (stuff)
