  2. How to fight hunger in the world? • 2003-2005 - 100 mlj persons suffered from hunger, 2010 – 925 mlj. • Millenium Development Goal No.1 - to reduce number of people living on 1$ per day by 50% till 2015

  3. How to increase food reserves? • it is necessary to increase food production by 70% till 2050 • 80% of food shall be produced on land that is already used for the reason (since the amount of land is limited) • only 19% of agricultural land cultivated through irrigation supplies 40% of the world’s food (Molden et al., 2010)

  4. How to ensure fresh water? • Water scarcity, not a lack of arable land that will be the major constraint to increased food production over the next few decades (UNDP, 2007) • ‘Boutros Boutros-Gali (1997) „the next war in the Middle East will be over water, not politics“

  5. How to ensure fresh water? • Global demand for water has tripled since the 1950s, but the supply of fresh water has been declining (Gleick, 2003) • Half a billion people live in water-stressed or water scarce countries, and by 2025 that number will grow to three billion due to an increase in population (Molden et al., 2007)

  6. How to escape droughts and floods? • As climate temperature extremes are predicted to increase, droughts and floods may become more severe and more frequent (Allouche, 2011)

  7. How to increase food production per one ha by using less water and maintaining safe environment? 80% of global freshwater is used for agricultural purposes

  8. How to guarantee more qualitative food? • Due to a number of food-related incidents and reported outbreaks worldwide, consumer confidence has begun to vacillate (Jevsnik, 2008, 277)

  9. How to ensure free trade in food without punishing the poorest countries? • A number of specialists emphasize the need for free international trade in order to assure global food security, as it enables supply and demand to be balanced across regions (Godfray et al., 2010).

  11. Conclusions • Research on food issues is of high importance in most of the scientific areas, inter alia natural sciences, economy and marketing
