Ions • An atom that has gained an electron (more negative) is called a negative ion • An atom that has lost an electron (more positive) is called a positive ion • Electrons are the only part of the atom that moves
Electricity • Study of Electricity is called electrostatics • Electricity is the movement of electrons from one object to another
Two Types of Electricity • Static electricity – electrons do not move freely, usually stays in one spot • Current electricity – electrons do move freely, this is found in a circuit
Static Electricity • Insulators – electrons do not move easily (the charge will stay where it was created) • Conductors – electrons can move freely over the object
Static Electricity • Electrostatic series table (will be given) – the object on the top is always positive the object on the bottom is always negative
Static Electricity • Three ways of charging an object: • Charge by friction (rubbing) • Charge by contact (just by touching) • Charge by induction (when the object is brought close but does not touch)
Static Electricity • Two major ways of discharging an object: • By Grounding • By discharging at a point
Current Electricity • Parts of a circuit: Know how to draw them and what they do. 1) Electrical Load - Converts energy 2) Electrical Source - Provides energy (electricity flows from the negative to the positive) 3) Electrical Switch - turns on and off the circuit 4) Wire - pathway
Current Electricity • What is Ohms Law V= IxR
Current Electricity • What is Electrical Energy, What is its unit, what is the equation to find it • Electrical energy is the movement of energy from the electron to the load • Joule • E = V x I x t (sec)
Current Electricity • What is Power, its unit, what is the equation 1) Power is the rate at which an object uses energy 2) Watts 3) P = V x I
Current Electricity • You need 5 things per question to get 5 points: 1) LIST 2) FORMULA (the one you will use) 3) SHOW WORK/CORRECT ANSWER 4) UNITS EVERYWHERE 5) SENTENCE
