The Clean Water Act(CWA) By: lettiewilliams Period 5
Description The primary federal law in the United States governing water pollution. Established the goals of eliminating releases of high amounts of toxic substances into water. Principal body of law currently in effect is based on the Federal Water Pollution Control Amendments of 1972and was significantly expanded from the Federal Water Pollution Control Amendments of 1948. Major amendments were enacted in the Clean Water Act of 1977and the Water Quality Act of 1987.
Water quality standards (WQS) are risk-based requirements which set site-specific allowable pollutant levels for individual water bodies, such as rivers, lakes, streams and wetlands The 1972 act authorized continued use of the water quality-based approach, but in coordination with the technology-based standards.
