  2. What is the CWA? The 1977 amendments: • Regulates pollutant discharge in U.S. waters. • Allowed EPA to create pollution control programs. • Made a standard of how much pollution can be deposited into U.S. waters. • Can’t dump sewage without a permit. • Noticed that they need to pay more attention to non-direct sources of pollution as well.

  3. Who Started It? • The Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948 was the first major U.S. law to address water pollution. • Congress started the CWA in 1972.

  4. Sources of Gross Stuff Nonpoint sources • Run-off of chemicals and sediments from cropland, livestock feedlots, logged forests, urban streets, parking lots, lawns, lawns, and golf courses. Point Sources • Pollutants at specific locations through drain pipes, ditches, or sewer lines.
