The Clean Water Act (CWA) gives EPA the authority to set limits and water-quality standards • Anyone who discharges pollutants to the water must have a permit for it to be considered legal • It also has specific legislation over water toxicity standards, as well as limits for how much water can be polluted • Mostly applies to businesses and corporations • Sets rules and regulations to keep polluters in check, meaning it serves more than just to set standards • Concerns water that will eventually go to people What is it?
The CWA was formerly an amendment to the Water Pollution Control Act, but after the 1977 amendments, it became a distinct act • The EPA is in charge of enforcement for the CWA, after they presented it to Congress and the Senate and it passed • The EPA set specific goals to meet by certain dates, chiefly 1983 and 1985. These goals were quite successful What Agency? / Other info
