In the paragraph that follows, I am going to make an attempt to name at least some of the earliest Spanish explorations in the New World. To take just the first example, it was in 1513 that an extraordinary event of considerable magnitude took place in what is now Florida when the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon landed there. It was in the same area, and little more than a quarter of a century later, that the explorer Hernando de Soto, who later discovered the Mississippi River, also landed in Florida in 1539. Among historians and among those who are interested in cultural history, Florida has reached noteworthy status for another reason. In 1565, Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed in Florida and began building the city of St. Augustine, the oldest permanent settlement in the United States. We all know that explorers in every age and in every part of the world have to be of a courageous nature and personality, but in those days Spanish explorers were perhaps the bravest of their time because they dared to be among the very first to set foot in what was then known as the New World.
