Monarchy • 2 kings (military role) • Council of Elders (advised kings) • Assembly of Citizens (approved major decisions & elected ephors) • 5 Ephors (ran day-to-day affairs) Democracy • Participation limited to male citizens, and citizenship was very restricted. • Boys began military training at age 7 • Boys attended school if family could afford it • studied a variety of subjects and received military training. • Isolated themselves • looked down on trade & wealth • forbade travel • Economy based on trade • Travel encouraged • Opened to new ideas • Exercised to produce healthy sons • Had to obey fathers/husbands • Could inherit property • No share in public life • Well-to-do women lived in seclusion & managed household • Poor women worked outside of the home

  2. Spoke the same language • Worshiped the same gods • Participated in the same festivals (Olympics) • Honored the same heroes (Achilles & Hercules) • Had the same view of non-Greeks (barbarians)
