The Mediterranean Sea Semi-enclosed sea • S ≈ 2.5 million km² • L ≈ 46,000 km • a link between 3 continents • only 3,8% under protection (0.4% without Pelagos) • Marine biodiversity UNEP/MAP/RAC-SPA, 2007 - 0.3 % of ocean volume - 0.8 % of ocean surface area 7%of known marine species One of the 25 biodiversity hotspots (Myers et al., 2000) • Diverse origins (30% of endemism rate) • Unequal distribution • Highly threatened
Work carried out regarding EBSAs identification in the Mediterranean under the Barcelona Convention / SPA-BD Protocol • Implemented in 2008-2009 by the Regional Activity Centre for Specially Protected Areas of the Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP/RAC-SPA) under the guidance of a Steering Committee, made of international and regional organizations • Using existing databases and expert opinions • Geological features of the seabed • Oceanographic features • Ecological features of certain vulnerable habitats • Biogeographic features of commercial pelagic species and species subject to incidental capture or by-catch Overlapping polygons
Synthesis report on the work carried out regarding EBSAs identification in the Mediterranean submitted to CBD as per Decision IG.20/7 of COP 17 (Paris, February 2012) 6 3 4 8 2 7 1 9 5 10 1 – Alboran Sea; 2 – Balearic Islands area; 3 – Gulf of Lions area; 4 – Tyrrhenian Sea; 5 – Tunisian Plateau; 6 - Adriatic Sea; 7 - Ionian Sea; 8 – Aegean Sea; 9 - Levantine Sea; 10 - Nile Delta sea area. The Pelagos Sanctuary, between the areas 3 and 4 , even though it meets the EBSA criteria, is not listed because it is already protected as SPAMI under the provisions of the SPA/BD Protocol.
