“Linking Research to Policy and Practice” Lab Extension Specialist (LES) Responsibilities: • Reach out to education stakeholders • Solicit stakeholder priorities, research, and program needs • Convey research that responds to expressed needs • Recruit eligible participants in REL random controlled trials
“Linking Research to Policy and Practice” LES Activities: Organizational Planning Awareness and Engagement Needs Sensing Dissemination Recruitment and Support for RCT
“Linking Research to Policy and Practice” Organizational Planning • Regional and state strategic planning for REL Mid-Atlantic • Develop annual action plan • Prepare Activity Logs weekly for monthly and quarterly progress reports and accountability • Serve on REL Mid-Atlantic committees • Provide feedback to improve REL operations
“Linking Research to Policy and Practice” Awareness and Engagement • Represent REL at county, state, and regional leaders of professional education and business/industry associations, government agencies, higher education institutions, and research organizations. • Assist stakeholders in identifying, understanding, and applying high-quality research. • Assist stakeholders in finding appropriate research resources that will help to implement evidence-based strategies.
“Linking Research to Policy and Practice” Needs-Sensing • Communicate with stakeholders to identify important education issues and research questions. • Document communication and interaction with stakeholders. • Follow the announcements, adoptions, modifications, and progress of state, regional, and national improvement initiatives. • Stay informed of emerging issues, reports, conferences, and other matters affecting education policies, practice, and research.
“Linking Research to Policy and Practice” Dissemination • Design and conduct public forums on Issues and Answers research reports or other IES research. • Share the findings of research reports and other products that are conducive to practitioner understanding and utility.
“Linking Research to Policy and Practice” Recruitment and Support for Randomized Controlled Trials • Training that covers study design and intervention. • Develop and implement recruitment strategies, protocols, information sessions, and reporting to invite and enlist schools and districts to participate in RCT. • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of contacts. • Work with principal investigators and study managers in communicating with stakeholders. • Review in-progress and completed recruiting campaigns for future studies. • Support investigators and managers during implementation of trials, training, and conducting of classroom/school observations.
