The Mauryan Empire • Location/Capital • Centered on the Ganges River valley in N India, expanded over almost all of India and Indus River Valley • Capital = Pataliputra, a great walled city • Government • Imperial w/well-organized bureaucracy, secret police, strong military • Emperors • Chandragupta Maurya • Asoka (Video Clip) • Cause of Decline • After Asoka died, local princes battled each other for power
The Deccan Kingdoms • Location • The Deccan Plateau in the center of India • Peoples • Mostly Dravidians who had a different language and traditions than the Aryan Mauryans • Tamil Kingdoms (Chola) • Relied on sea trade, sometimes ruled by women • Religion • Both Hindu and Buddhist (Tamils mostly Buddhist), generally tolerant of all faiths
The Gupta Empire • Location/Capital • Also located in Northern India on the Ganges • Much smaller than Mauryan Empire • Capital = Pataliputra • Government • Strong, central government centered on peace and prosperity • allowed regions/villages to have their own control • Trade and Farming • Exported cotton cloth, pottery and metalware to E Africa, Middle East and SE Asia • Food crops included wheat, rice and sugar • Arts and Learning • Painted temples, cave walls (Ajanta) with stories in Sanskrit • Built many stupas (Buddhist temples) • Carved/sculpted many Buddhist statues • In education, invented math concepts such as decimal system and the number zero
