All of the items in red were meant to be completed in groups, however your behavior over the next three days determines if you get that privilege As part of your final you will present • A Controversial Issue • There are several within the book, you will be assigned a topic • You will present for THREE minutes to the class on: • How it presents itself in The Giver • How it presents itself in our society • The Pros and Cons of the issue • With those in your group on the same side as you, you will write a refutation of the issue • Theme • There are several within the book, you will be assigned a topic • You will present for THREE minutes to the class on: • How this theme is presented in the book • Quotes and explanation to prove that this is a theme in the novel • Do we ever learn this lesson in our society • On your own you will write an essay about a theme in the novel, using the format we learn this week This adds up to a six minute presentation and two essays: 60 percent of your final: trust me you want to work in groups….

Literature Circles • Each week-until we finish the book- you will work together with an assigned group to complete several steps: • Reading the text together as a group- you will be required to do the assigned reading as a group • Lit. circle packets: • These packets contain roles and assignments for each member of your group • Discussion Director • Summarizer • Connector • Illuminator • Word Watcher • Each week you will turn in one of these packets at the end of class on Friday. The packet must be complete and any extra pages attached. • You will then take quizzes together as a group • Sometimes I will pick just one person to represent your group- so you are only as strong as your weakest member • Individually you are still responsible for the foldable and the Reading questions although you may help each other

Work Day: 12/4 Project Parts: Research controversial issue- what is it Find examples in the Giver Research arguments for and against controversial issue Write refutation essay with my partners who agree with me-type Find examples of theme in the Giver Explain how those quotes prove the theme Find examples of this lesson (theme) in my society Write thesis for theme essay Write three body paragraphs for theme essay-type Put together a poster or powerpoint for presentation Plan who will say what in presentation Practice presentation TO DO: Write a thesis for your theme essay Write paragraph #1 for the theme essay (sep. per group) Create a calendar/plan for when you are going to complete all of the parts to the project/presentation (could be in an agenda or seppaper- each) Finish reading chap 16-17 Lit Circle questions for chap 16-17 (at least one per chap)- stamped
