The Program This is an accelerated program leading to elementary certification and a Master of Arts Degree with a Specialization in Elementary Education. Students will meet requirements by completing course work and working full time in a partnership school for one entire school year. This unique university-public school partnership will provide adults who have degrees in other fields to fulfill their desire to become teachers while helping to meet the demand for more teachers in Illinois.
Goals • To provide a graduate program for adults with degrees to become certified elementary teachers in one year. • To meet the demands for the teacher shortage in Illinois • To develop partnerships with local schools that will benefit children, graduate students, teachers, and the school district.
Requirements for admission • Bachelor’s degree from an ISBE-approved institution • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 • General Education Requirements ( 3 credit courses) College Writing (2 courses) Math (2) Communications (1) Science (2) Humanities (3) Social Science (2) • Eighteen hours in an endorsement

What is the tuition? • $555/ credit hour for summer school (There may be a slight increase in the fall.)
What kind of financial aid is available? • Student loans are available for qualified students. Check with the financial aid office at (815) 836-5263 for more information.
When is the summer school session held? • June 1st through July 10th, 2009 • M-W-F, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm • T-Th, from 9:00 am to Noon. • Dates TBD for 2010 • Lewis University’s Romeoville campus
Who will be on the interview committee for the selection of the Interns? • Professors and district administrators may serve on this committee. • Selection of candidates completed in mid-March. (as soon as possible following interview)
How do I get a substitute teacher certification and what will it cost? • Take your transcripts to the Regional Office of Education • Will County in New Lenox • Fill out an application form • Pay $30 (certified check/state evaluation) plus Will County registration fee of $20 Register multiple schools
How are background checks carried out? • When you fill out the forms for substitute certification and everything is found to be in order, the county will submit a background check. They will inform the applicant of the results. The applicant will need two forms of identification for the I-9 form which is part of the application package.
