  2. 1. Importance of Preparatory Groundwork Have to inform both sides in advance Have to think of appropriate time to visit Must have rapport with community 2. Need to divide into focus groups Groups of 76 and 160 are too big!! In particular men v. women and user v. non-users 3. For Note takers and Chart writers Have to be quick to put down indicators But have to note anecdotes/examples in full (caselets) Should use local language Note number and breakdown of participants somewhere Feedback on Fieldwork

On Facilitation Explanation of objectives is key How discussion is started will set the tone of what follows Sequencing the discussion is important to avoid respondent fatigue If discussion too negative, ask for positive counter examples Benchmarking is also useful – eg. What would you say is ‘reasonably good’? Always ask for personal examples/experiences Don’t give them criteria – let them generate Likewise don’t influence or change scores – let them score Need to get down to criteria fast so examples can come after scoring and are not repeated.   4. 5. On Scoring Voting versus Consensus – both have pros and cons But always ask for and note reasons for dissent 6. Importance of Input Tracking/Standards Several of the issues related to inputs Supply side data and partnership with sector ministries is therefore key 7. On Interface Meeting Must be careful in case of volatile situations – act as neutral intermediary Have to be innovative Facilitation is key – focus on the way forward, not on accusations Ensure everyone leaves in good spirits Feedback on Fieldwork…

  5. 8. The Need for Follow-up If you want change then have to monitor Only way to ensure future participation That is what makes role of local NGO/CSO very important That is also what makes it important to move up the service delivery chain and influence policy Feedback on Fieldwork…
