Mathematically Speaking • Mental Math Strings • Word Wall • Make them interactive • Encourage students to speak the math language when they are explaining.
What is inquiry? What does inquiry look like in math class?
The Four “E”s Engage Explore Explain Extend
Explore - Discovery This is the part of lessons where students “get messy with the math.” http://www.learner.org/workshops/missinglink
Discovery using technology • Order of operations • Exponents • Changing fractions to decimals – repeating or terminating • Patterns – recursive and explicit • Probability
Teacher Asked:Find a fraction that will be a repeating decimal. Find a fraction that will be a terminating decimal. Student’s Question:How do you know if a fraction is going to be a repeating decimal or a terminating decimal? Let me show you what my students discovered!!!
