  1. Albion College Model United Nations Forum on Human Security Friday, 23 October 2009 4:30pm-5:30pm Norris 104

  2. What is Model United Nations? • Saving the world in 96 hours or less“In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization's agenda. Students make speeches, prepare draft resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the conference rules of procedure - all in the interest of mobilizing "international cooperation" to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world.” (UNA-USA)

  4. Preparing for the ACMUN Simulation • Please make sure you do some actual research! • Now that you have a better grounding on what human security actually is, hopefully you’ll have a better idea as to the scope of this topic. • Your “position papers” (for this simulation) will merely be stated and will not be collected by the Secretariat. Rather, we expect that your research prior to the simulation will guide your point of view as you debate with your country’s policy in mind. • At the national level, position papers will certainly be more in-depth!

  5. What to wear • Western • Business • Attire • W • B • A

  6. Lunch • For lunch: You will have a half-hour lunch break. However, just like at nationals, we will not be providing food. With that said, you’ll have enough time to grab a quick bite at Baldwin (for those on board), go to the Eat Shop, bring your own food and eat in the room, etc.

  7. Awards and the National Team • The top three delegates of ACMUN ‘09 will receive an award: • Distinction of Major Speaker • Distinction of Minor Speaker • Distinction of Honorable Mention OR Distinction of Director’s Choice • Along with this distinction comes the automatic invitation for these awardees to join the national team at HNMUN ’10 (which will be held 11-14 February in Boston). • For everyone else, you will be receiving the paper application at the end of the workshop/simulation. This same application will be made available via the ACMUN website on Monday, giving you two extra days to fill it out.

  8. What are we looking for at ACMUN ‘09? • We will be looking at each delegate on an individual basis and, among other things, taking into account: • Attendance • Western Business Attire • Research and consistency • Application of workshop to simulation • Quality of responses, as well as frequency (participation) • How you work with each other

  9. Selection of Invitations • 6 Major Criteria: • Availability for HNMUN • Attendance • Human Security forum • ACMUN 2009 • Participation in previous conferences • Past/Current research • Public speaking experience • Response to short essay question
