Feasibility Report on Tablet Brands By Zachary Corley, Caleb Elson, and Bianca Lawrence
Introduction and Recommendation • We reviewed the most popular tablets from 5 different brands • Samsung – Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 edition • Apple – IPad Air • Lenovo – Think Pad Tablet 2 • Google – Nexus 10 • Microsoft – Surface Pro 2 • Based on the data we evaluated, we recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 edition as top choice in terms of hardware and pricing.
Methods • To support our recommendations, we evaluated the feasibility of each option using five criteria: • Processor Speed • RAM (Also known as system memory) • Depth (assuming a smaller depth is preferable) • Display Resolution • Price (assuming the least expensive model) • In order to gather this information we used the tablets official webpages, Amazon, and review sites such as CNET.
Specifications – Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 Edition • Processor: 1.9 GHz Quad Core + 1.3 GHz Quad Core • RAM: 3GB • Depth: 7.9mm • Display Resolution: 2560x1600 • Price: $549
Specifications – Apple IPad Air • Processor: 1.4 GHz A7 chip • RAM: 1GB • Depth: .29in (7.366mm) • Display Resolution: 2048x1536 • Price: $499
Specifications – Lenovo Think Pad Tablet 2 • Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Atom • RAM: 2GB • Depth: .4in (10.16mm) • Display Resolution: 1366x768 • Price: $699
Specifications – Google Nexus 10 • Processor: A15-1.7GHz • RAM: 2GB • Depth: 8.9mm • Display Resolution: 2560x1600 • Price: $399
Specifications – Microsoft Surface Pro 2 • Processor: Intel i5 1.7GHz • RAM: 4GB • Depth: .53in (13.462mm) • Display Resolution: 1920x1080 • Price: $899
Results • The different brands were compared against each other and ranked 1-5 in each of the different criteria, 5 being the highest score, and 1 being the lowest. • These scores were then totaled and ranked based on their total score.
Results • Final Ranking: • Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 Edition • Google’s Nexus 10 • Apple’s IPad Air • Lenovo’s Think Pad Tablet 2* • Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2* • * Although Lenovo and Microsoft scored the same, Microsoft’s Surface’s price is significantly higher
Final Recommendations • We recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2014 edition as the overall best buy due to its impressive 1.9GHz quad core processor and screen resolution at a reasonable price. • We must note that the different operating systems on each of the tablets make significant impacts on their performance and usability as well. For example, although the IPad Air’s A7 processor is significantly slower than the Galaxy Tab’s on paper, the performance and speed of both tablets would likely be similar due to the operating systems they run on.
