  1. Salsa stand off(Feasibility report) Prepared for Ms. Ng Prepared By: Ryan Burkhart, Michael Bertucci, Andrew Ambrose, LaPaula Anderson, and Abdullah Almofeez

  2. Introduction • A quality taste test was given to 5 participants consisting of four different salsas. The brands of salsa used were Great Value Chunky, Taco Bell, Pace, and Great Value Thick & Chunky. All the salsa used was purchased at a nearby Walmart. The favorite selection was found using a criteria. We used a scale from 1 to 5; 1 being low quality and 5 being the best quality. The criteria used was chunkiness, flavor, spiciness, and price per ounce.

  3. Methods for Evaluating the Salsa We evaluated the salsas on 5 different traits, that most consumers consider when buying salsa. We all agreed that chunkiness, spiciness, flavor, calories, and price per ounce are determining factors when purchasing salsa. We needed to stay consistent, so it didn’t effect the rating of the salsas. we all used the same dipping technique (shown below), bowls, chips, and surrounding environment. The dipping technique consisted of 4 steps. Scoop ½ way towards the opposite side side of the bowl Dip into bowl until it touches the bottom Lift up chip and consume Grab a chip

  4. Results of the Evaluation • This table determines the best salsa on 5 categories: • Calories • Chunkiness • Spicy • Flavor • Price Per Oz • Chunkiness, Spicy, and Flavor were based on a numbering system, 1 being the worst, 5 being the best. Price Per oz, and Calories where averaged compared between the 4 and ranked. The table numbers come from an average of 4different salsa testers.

  5. Salsa Results

  6. Great value chunky • Great Value Chunky salsa is the Walmart generic brand of salsa. It had the highest number of calories at 230. It had a Chunkiness rating of 3, which is the second place in the category. Under the Spicy category, it was second-to-last with the rating of 2. The rating in the Flavor category was 2.75, which tied for second place. And the Price per Oz for Great Value Chunky was 8.25 cents, which turned out to be the cheapest salsa. Overall, Great Value Chunky had a rating of 7.75. Great Value Chunky made third place in the report.

  7. Taco bell • Taco Bell salsa had high hopes by all of the participants, but sadly it finished last. Taco bell salsa had the second lowest number of calories, which was at 150. The Chunkiness of the salsa had a rating of 1.5; it wasn’t very chunky for being a chunky salsa. The Spicy category was a 1.5, which was the lowest rating in the category. Flavor was at a rating of 2.75, which tied for second place. And Price per Oz was 12.4 cents, which tied for first place in highest price. Overall, Taco Bell salsa had a rating of 5.75.

  8. PACE • Pace salsa is one of the most well-known salsa brands there is, and their score is the reason why. Pace had the lowest calories of 140. In the Chunkiness category, it made third place with a rating of 2.5. Under the spicy category, it made first place with a rating of 2.75. Flavoring was at a rating of 3.25, which made first place again. And in Price per Oz, it was price at 12.4 cents an ounce. Overall, pace had the highest score of 8.50.

  9. GREAT VALUE THICK AND CHUNKY • Great Value Thick and Chunky had a surprising score to the participants. They all predicted that this salsa would be last place contester, but they were fooled. In the calories category, it was at 230. The rating of the Chunkiness category was at 3.5, which made the first place spot. And under the Spicy category, Great Value Thick and Chunky made second place with a score of 2.25. In the Flavor category, it made last place with the score of 2.25. And the Price per Oz was 8.4 cents, which was the second cheapest price. Overall, Great Value Thick and Chunky made second place with the total score of 8. It was surprising to us all.

  10. Executive Summary • We researched the feasibility of two name brand and two generic salsas all from Walmart: Great Value Chunky, Taco Bell, Pace, and Great Value Thick & Chunky. Because Option 3, Pace, offers the highest level of chunkiness, spiciness, flavor, calories, and tied for the most ounces for price, we have determined Pace to have the best product for the price.

  11. Conclusion • Each of the four salsas had definite advantages and disadvantages on overall satisfaction. The salsas in general all had similar calories count and ounces contained inside. Pace was the most promising salsa out of the four. It had the best price per ounce, flavor, and spiciness overall. Coming in second place was Great Value Thick and Chunky. This had the best price per ounce, chunkiness rating, and overall averaged well in spiciness and flavor. Taco Bell and Great Value Chunky lacked in categories of flavor and spiciness leaving them in the loser’s bracket.

  12. Recommendations • Going to a grocery to choose a mild salsa can be hard with all the different brands. We recommend Pace salsa based on flavor and spiciness. Along side with that, the chunkiness of it fares well to the others. It also has to lowest amount of calories and one of the higher Oz per prices compared to the other salsas which give you less Oz and more calories.
