  2. Starter • Scenario 1: You are new to the web. You rarely use it. When you do use it, you only go on to check your bank statement. You have a telephone connection and a PC. • Scenario 2: You are a business person who works from home. Connected to the office, you are constantly downloading and uploading documents. You also take part in video conference calls to have meetings. • What internet connections are suitable for each of the above? Write down the appropriate type and WHY you think this.

  3. Objectives • Understand the different ways in which we can connect to the internet. • Know what internet connections are available. • Be able to select the most appropriate method of internet connection.

  4. The connections you need to know

Dial-Up Internet • Dial up internet is an extremely slow internet connection. • 56kbps (roughly 0.5mpbs). • Requires a phone-line and a modem on your computer. • Dial’s your ISP to make a connection. • Charges per minute (often around 1p per minute). • Not suitable for downloading music etc (an average song would take around 1-2 hours to download!) • Perfect for rare use. • Ideal for businesses when connecting simply to send an email etc.

  6. Satellite Internet • Useful for users where standard internet (broadband / cable) is not available. • Also ideal for people who like to move around a lot. • Available world-wide • Some delay when using the connection, making it a bit “laggy / jumpy.” • Not suitable for online games or advanced use like “remote surgery” • Suffers from “rain fade.” Signal deterioration from moisture. • Around 3mbps @ £30 a month.

Review Task • Complete the Internet Connections worksheet. • Finished? • Begin working on a presentation which explains the different internet connections available: • Type of connection • An example of a company that provides that connection (costs, speed etc). • Who would use the connection with examples. • Good and bad points of the connection.
