Special Education Special Education is a specially designed service that meets the unique needs of a student with a disability which provides access to and/or benefit from the general education curriculum.
Related Services • Related Services are: • developmental, • corrective, and • supportive services • that are required for a student with a disability to benefit from special education services.
Supplementary Aids and Services, and Other Supports • Supplementary Aids and Services, and Other Supportsare provided to the student with a disability in: • the general education classroom, • other education related settings, • extracurricular activities, and • nonacademic settings with nondisabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate in the least restrictive environment.

“Other Supports” for School Personnel Other Supports for school personnel that must be provided to the student or on behalf of the student: • to participate with his/her nondisabled peers; and/or • to help the student progress toward meeting his/her measurable annual goals.
“Other Supports” for School Personnel Remember: If a student has other supports for school personnel identified on his/her IEP, the types of training and/or supports need to be documented on the student’s IEP.
Frequency, Duration, and Location • The law mandates that a student’s IEP MUST have the: • frequency, • location, and • duration • of the services (including • accommodations), • modifications, and other supports for school personnel need to be documented on the student’s IEP. ACTIVITIES Identifying Frequency, Location, Duration, and Extent
ACTIVITY 1 Tony will receive individualized reading and writing instruction in the resource room each day during the language arts block.
Documentation Required for Assessments For a student with a disability who is NOT taking the regular statewide assessment, a statement on the student’s IEP must address: • Why the student cannot participate in the regular statewide assessment. AND • Why the particular type of alternate assessment is appropriate.
ACTIVITY 2 When the weekly math assessment equals to or exceeds 30 minutes in the general education classroom, Habban will have a 3 minute break for every 15 minutes of math assessment throughout the year.
Documentation Required for Alternate Assessments (KAMM and KAA) • Students with disabilities • who take the KAMMshould have a measurable annual goal in the academic area that is assessed. • The measurable annual goal must be • based on the grade-level, academic content standard. • Students taking the KAAmust have short term objectives or benchmarks for all measurable annual goals. • http://www.ksde.org/Default.aspx?tabid=420
