What is the MES? • Doncaster Museums’ Education Service, provides opportunities for experiential learning at both of the fabulous sites of Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery and Cusworth Hall Museum & Park • David Kolb, the well known author of learning theories defines experiential learning as “the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” • Learning experiences are what we are about! All of our workshops are developed around the curriculum

Example WorkshopAncient Rome Look out the Romans are coming! Key Stage 2 (Adaptable for KS1) Session length – 1½ - 2 hours Curriculum themes - (Invaders and Settlers, Local History) This hands-on workshop is based on historical enquiry and the use of artefacts. Children will consider the reasons for and the effects of the invasion and settlement of the Romans in Britain, with specific reference to our local area. We will investigate and handle genuine Roman artefacts. The enactment of simple role-playing in costume will assist children to compare and contrast the Roman way of life with the lifestyle of the Iron Age Celtic tribes.
Example WorkshopSculpture • Sculpture – It’s no so hard! • Key Stage 1 and 2 (Adaptable for schools with special requirements) Session length – 1½ - 2 hoursCurriculum themes - Art and Design, Design and Technology, Science, Citizenships • This ‘hands on’ workshop is designed to enable children to develop their understanding of shape, form, texture and the sensory quality of materials, and to equip children with the practical information necessary to create their own three-dimensional sculpture in the form of a clay maquette [small-scale model]. • A tour of the sculpture in the gallery will encourage children to communicate observations, ideas and feelings by looking at the differences and similarities in sculptures and the reasoning behind different artists work.
Outreach Visits • We provide outreach visits to both Primary and Secondary Schools • Our most recent successful Secondary school visit was at Danum Lower school where we formed part of their ‘Medieval’ experience days for which we provided staff and the resources shown in the following pictures

Cusworth Hall Museum & Park Workshop Example 1 • Life in the PastKey Stage 1 (adaptable for Key Stage 2) Session length - 1½ to 2 hours Curriculum themes – History; Science • A “hands on” workshop looking at continuity and change. Find out what life was like for children 100 years ago before the onset of World War 1. Whilst many adults were aware of the tension rising in the lead up to the outbreak of war, the life of a child was simple. The new century had begun with schooling for all children. Helping at home with daily chores was completed quickly and willingly to leave time to play. Travel back in time to find out what it was like to go to school. Investigate household objects from the past and experience doing the washing the hard way. • Stay for the day. Book a workshop in the Education Suite, stay for lunch and spend self guided time in the museum. Worksheets can be provided for self guided time in The Great Kitchen.
