To accessing Factiva from off campus: Go to www.unc.edu Click on “Libraries” Click on “E-Research Tools” which will take you to this screen
Searching in Factiva This is what the Factiva search screen will look like You will need to change the default options
Searching Sources • Factiva will default to search all sources, but you can search a specific publication • You can select a source category, or you can type the publication name in the Find a Source box • Then view results and click on the source you want included
Using Free Text for searching • Utilizes basic search operators: • And, Or, Not, ( ), w/n • Factiva has a Quick Reference Sheethttp://www.factiva.com/collateral/files/factivacom_search_QRC_F-2879.pdf
Additional Options: • Choose to exclude: • republished news • recurring pricing and market data • Obituaries, sports, calendars… • Sort your results by: • Publication date, most recent • Publication date, oldest • Relevance
How your results will look • Click on the blue headline to view the article
How each article will appear • Print the article using the icon at the top of the page
Why use Factiva if you’ve already Googled? • Factiva covers information on industries, public and private companies, business and management topics, and historical news from a variety of subscription sources not accessible through Google. • Ability to immediately view articles without registering or subscribing (can’t guarantee that with Google results) • Factiva keeps archived articles readily available • And, it’s available to University Faculty and Staff free through the Library
Conclusion • Factiva is a great resource when you get those last minute requests. • Easy to see the last 6 months of news coverage on a prospect or company • Helpful if you need to find a specific article • Available to you free, on or off campus • Note the time out period for inactive viewing is 10 minutes
