The College of Petroleum & Minerals was established in September 1963. The status of the College was changed in 1975 to “University of Petroleum & Minerals”. The University was renamed to King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in 1986. KFUPM History

The academic system at KFUPM is similar to the American model with the following features: Semester System : (Academic year is divided into 2 Semesters of 16 weeks each + Summer session of 8 weeks). Average time for graduation is 4 years. Credit Hour System (1 Credit = weekly 50 minutes lectures or 100 minute lab or field study) ACADEMIC SYSTEM
Undergraduate Admission Requirements • Secondary school certificate (12 years) or equivalent with good standing • Passing two entrance examination 1. General Aptitude Test conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education 2. Subject Tests conducted by KFUPM
The University’s one year Preparatory Program before starting the undergraduate study is intended to improve: the proficiency of English, knowledge of Mathematical and Analytical Techniques, mental and manual skills with introduction of new subject areas and familiarize with the various majors for selection of their choice. PREPARATORY PROGRAM
Graduation Requirement • Completion of all specified courses in the degree programs (maximum of 133 Cr. hrs) • Cumulative GPA of 2 or higher out of 4 scale. • Major GPA of 2 for all major courses • Meeting the Coop/Summer training requirements.

Faculty Training Program Faculty members are encouraged and financially supported for attending: • National and international conferences • Academic development program offered within the University & outside • Sabbatical research • Industrial experience through summer employment

Self Assessment The objectives of self-assessment at KFUPM are to: • Improve and maintain academic standards • Enhance students’ learning. • Verify that the existing programs meet their objectives and institutional goals. • Provide feedback for quality assurance of academic programs. • Prepare the academic program for accreditation.
External Assessment and Accreditation • KFUPM programs are reviewed from time to time external agencies and that we take great pride in the quality of programs offered. • All Engineering programs are recognized by the Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) as substantially equivalent to those programs offered by the Universities in the United States.
The Engineering programs evaluated twice by ABET - first time in 1993 and then in 2002. They are awarded ‘Substantial Equivalency’ status through the year 2008. • College of Industrial Management is accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
