Movie Overview • A child’s parents need to speak their native languages to the child. • Infants learn two languages as if they were learning one. • Language needs to be reinforced to keep brain connections active. • Speaking multiple languages boosts brain development. • Speaking two languages causes children to think, understand and analyze. • Consistency and commitment from both parents is vital.
Basic Facts • Critical period: Birth to puberty • Delays age-related dementia • Simultaneous learning vs. sequential learning • Enhanced ability to concentrate as adult • Greater understanding of cultures • Greater recovery after brain injuries • By ages 2-3 they are sorting out and by 7 they have a strong grasp on the languages • Multitasking
