Today we will… • Understand who the Ku Klux Klan were • Understand why the KKK got away with so many racist attacks
Who were they? • Pro-White, Pro-Christian American Nationalists • Secret organisation • Started in Southern States after the US Civil War • Wore white robes or sheets with masks and pointed hoods
What did they believe? • Black Americans were inferior to White Americans • Black Americans were born to be slaves • Black Americans did not deserve any of the civil rights that Whites enjoyed • Also against Catholics, Jews and even divorced women • They said they protected the ‘American Way of Life’
What did they do? • Burned crosses near homes of victims to intimidate and frighten • Kidnapped, whipped, mutilated or murdered victims • Marched through towns threatening victims and warning some to leave town • Held rallies • Involved in lynching
Why did people support The Klan? • Unemployment was growing (especially during the 1930s) • More and more immigrants were coming into the USA • Black Americans moving North were causing competition for homes and jobs • Poor white people felt the Klan protected their jobs and homes
How much influence did the Klan have? • In 1924, KKK membership was as much as 3million • In the 1920s, the Klan marched through Washington DC • Many local police, sheriffs and judges were Klan members • Many Klan members were rich • The Klan was almost never convicted of any attacks in the South • Their film The Birth of a Nation was shown in the White House
