GPSS B.2013-1 The Funding Rubric
Background • Originated in discussions last year • Based on the “points system” of BGA • Organizations earn points in several categories • Allows easy comparison between groups • Gives a snapshot of group activity • Brings about greater GPSS involvement
Old vs. New Old System New System Allows groups to earn better allocations Merit is considered in many categories Allocations are related to groups vital signs Lots of information is provided Justification is objective and related to current factors • Historic patterns are locked in • Merit is not considered • Allocations are divorced from a groups vital signs • Not a lot of information provided • Justification is tradition + gutfeeling + emotion
Current Context • Some groups >>$ • Some groups <<$ • Why? • History • Does it correct? • Not apparent • Funding decisions based on history perpetuate history
Worried? • Not a punishment • Not a prescription • Not a reallocation • Not a current year requirement • Involved GSO’s have no reason to worry • Informs allocation discussion • Minimum requirements easily obtainable • Helps break “locked in” funding pattern
Category: Funding • Assesses GSO previous funding use • Assesses GSO fundraising
Category: Activity • Assesses GSO’s community involvement • Points for involvement in either ECU or National Organizations
Category: Internal • Shows completion of internal senate assessments • Involvement in GPSS internal affairs/procedures
Logistics • GSO Treasurers must document progress • Finance Committee will “score” GSOs • Rubric scores will be available to aid allocation discussions • Groups need >=3 points • Progress towards points shown for emergency funding • Will impact upcoming GSOs
GPSS B. 2013-2 Funding Workshop Requirement
What it does • Straightforward • Requires groups to attend annual funding workshop • Ensures groups know funding procedures Isn’t that already the case? • Yes and no • Requirement part of Funding Manual • Not in the bylaws • Funding Manual can change • This needs to be constant • Current structure restricted date (hence first meeting debacle)
Leadership Series • CSLE/GPSS Collaboration • Graduate Student Leadership Series • Identifying and presenting your leadership experience/skills on a resume or CV (Collaboration with Career Center). Also presentation of information (could be data) about the leadership qualities that business look for. • What skills match particular fields, etc. • Intersection between leadership opportunities and career path • Leadership Certificate • How can it be tailored to Graduate Students • Explanation of ILF and LID model and their integration in the certificate • What would graduate students need to do to begin, including options to bypass certain competencies/elements based on ability to show accomplishment of competencies • Market to GPSS and graduate students • Creating handouts/presentations on competency domains and leadership traits with definitions so graduate students can accurately catalog their experiences and acquisition of leadership skills and ability to apply these concepts accurately in their day-to-day experiences. • Education/discussions on the various schools of thoughts on leadership, leading peers, exerting leadership from a subordinate position (leading from behind), and possible simulations.
