General Assembly Meeting WORK PACKAGE 4: Innovation of key neutronic technologies: Detectors and Moderators TASK 4.5: Moderator testing and development beamline
Overview of WP4 Task 4.5 Aims of Moderator testing and development beamline (TBL) • provide design information for energy sensitive imaging of the ESS moderator • perform test experiments at BRR on TBL component prototypes • ensure design flexibility for further use of TBL beyond moderator commissioning • assess operation safety and minimum interference with neighboring beamlines BrightnESS is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 676548
Deliverables D4.4. Reportontheengineering design of the BRR lowdimensionalmoderator Duemonth: 12 Status: completed D4.7. Reportontheconception design of the ESS and the BRR test beam-line Duemonth: 19 Status: completed ESS TBL design (subcontracted) readyfor CDR D4.15. Finalverification of BRR moderator Duemonth: 36 Status: prepared, no delayforeseen The new BRR compactcold neutron moderator is unlikelyto be readyfortestsbythe end of theBrightnESS project. Instead, thoroughcharacterization of theexistingmoderator is proposed, and fulloperationtests of the ESS TBL prototypecomponents. Test environment design completed, preliminarytestsperformedat BNC. BrightnESS is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 676548
Milestones MS13. Modelling and experimental verification of the new moderator concept Due month: 10 Status: reached MS21. Verification of ESPI (energy sensitive pinhole imaging) setup. Due month: 20 Status: reached MS26. Verification of prototype components (BRR & ESS). Due month: 29 Status: no delay foreseen MS28. Verification of moderator and ESPI components Due month: 32 Status: no delay foreseen BrightnESS is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 676548
MS21. Verification of ESPI (energy sensitive pinhole imaging) setup
Next steps • Prepare test methodology and environment for TBL component prototype characterization, perform the experiments, process the obtained results and deliver the reports (D4.15, MS26 and MS28). • Test and characterize the very high flux tolerant detector (solid boron converter, two layer, orthogonal construction) prototype as fallback solution for TBL. • Risk factors in achieving these deliverables: unforeseen delays in production of TBL component prototypes. Unforeseen and unlikely non-availability of BNC beamlines. Mitigation: thorough mechanical and automation FAT, pre-manufacturing neutrontests of critical materials, final neutron tests at ESS.
