Ivan IV Crash Course • Known as Ivan the Terrible • Received the throne when he was three • At age 16 he claimed power from the Boyars • Made himself Czar • “Good Period” from 1547 to 1560 • Wife Anastasia • “Bad Period” after 1560 • Wife died • Accuses Boyars of poisoning his wife • Creates secret police force to kill traitors • Thousands died • Nobles lost their lands • New class of nobles given land in exchange for loyalty • Killed his eldest son • Second son was weak and died without an heir
Peter I • Known as Peter the Great • Grand nephew of Anastasia, Ivan’s wife • Became Czar in 1689 • Visited Europe in 1697 • Learned of European culture and factories • Goal: Westernization • The adoption of western ideas, technology and culture • Strengthen Russia into a European Power
Peter I cont. • Reform • Russian Orthodox Church was placed under state control • Decreased power of landowners • Introduced European tactics to the military • Opened schools, libraries and museums • Westernized dress, grooming and activities • Expanded borders • Strong centralized government • Established St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg • Fought with Sweden to gain land • “Window on the West” • Made the new capital city • Connected Russia through the Baltic Sea • Serfs forced to help build • Nobles forced to live in the city
Results • Brought Russia out of the middle ages economically and politically • Serfdom remained • Many did not support his ideas of Westernization • “For you know yourself that, though a thing be good and necessary, our people will not do it unless forced to.”

Write a letter to Peter the Great. Tell him what you like or dislike about the changes occurring and the new policies being implemented in Russia. Would you rather remain in Russia or live under one of the other rulers, Louis XIV, Elizabeth I or Philip II?
