Early Life • Born on June 7, 1965 in Bristol, England • Raised Catholic • Showed an interest in the grisly and gruesome aspects of life as a young child • His mother described him as a morbid child • As a teenager, he was interested in drawing and fascinated with images of disease and injury • His father left the family when he was twelve years old • His mother supported his passion for drawing

Education • Studied at the Goldsmith’s College at the University of London • During college, he put together a breath-taking exhibit entitled “Freeze” in 1988 • He soon became well-known for his unusual materials and challenging art concepts • One of his early works, “With Dead Head,” illustrates his interest in death

  4. “With Dead Head,” created in 1992, is a gelatin silver print mounted on aluminum featuring an artist posing next to a severed head in a morgue.

  5. (Education continued…) • Hirst received support from art collector Charles Saatchi, who collected his pieces and lent him financial assistance • Hirst’s reputation advanced

  6. Career • Had his first solo exhibition at the Woodstock Street Gallery in London in 1991 • Participated in the Young British Artists show where he displayed “The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living” • Became one of the best known artists in Britain because of his gruesome and controversial works • Won the prestigious Turner Prize in 1995 • One of the world’s wealthiest artists today • Currently lives in Devon, England with his American girlfriend and their three sons • Launched his own skateboard line in 2011
