Problems with job boards • Job seekers and job providers not connected effectively • Low hiring rates for Job boards (below 4%) Why? Nick Corcodilos, “Job Board Journalism: Selling Out the American Job Hunter”, Ask the Head Hunter, June 17, 2003.
Job Providers: • Often existing systems do not simplify • their search, filter & selection process • Many unqualified applicants • applying for the job Job Seekers: Systems that are complex and inconvenient to use Applicants have little flexibility in customizing their professional information according to their needs
Our Solution A clean and easy-to-use vertical search application called "hirecloud"

Survey – Key Findings Job Seekers • 1-2 printed page resume • Difficult to fit their professional qualifications • Want to provide other supportive information Job Providers • Manually filter • Many irrelevant job applications • Other resources could be useful
Our Solution • Easy to find relevant job applicants • Quick snapshots of qualifications • Factor in other professional information or resources
Design Evolution • Low-fi Prototype 1 • User Test 1 • Low-fi Prototype 2 • User Test 2 • Interactive Prototype
User test 1 “Create Application Form” difficult to use “Weighting interface” too confusing Workflow modeling too restrictive
User Test 2 System was intuitive and simple to use User liked break-down of supportive documents “Public Cloud” vs. “My Cloud” unfamiliar to user
Next Steps – Where do we go from here? • Perform user tests • Perform heuristic evaluation • Implement • Pilot test • Launch • Continuously refine and improve
Conclusion • Application of design methodologies • Focus on user needs • Foundation for a useful web application
