Hub Schools - Context: • Launched in January 2018 – 35 English Hubs – part of the Government’s social mobility action plan Unlocking Talent, Fulfilling Potential • DFE identified schools who met initial criteria and sent expression of interest letters – 90%+ in PSC over three years; and Good or Outstanding Ofsted judgement. • Applications closed in May 2018 - over 170 applications • Further sifting criteria including: EYFS Good Level of Development; KS1/2 attainment; capacity to support other schools • Minister appointed 32 hubs in July 2018/ Official Launch September 2018 • This mirrors the already successful approach with Maths Hubs – high performing schools which share their knowledge with other schools locally;

  4. Where are the English Hubs? • 32 Appointed across the country (3 more to come) • Some areas are “cold spots” • 14 in Northern Powerhouse • 4 in London • Some in (or near) opportunity areas • A range of large and small schools • All Hubs are Primary Schools. EnglishHubs

  6. Hub Aims: To support schools in achieving excellence in early literacy teaching through the initial focus of: • Developing early language and closing the word gap • Developing early reading through systematic synthetic phonics • Promoting a love of reading

  7. What hubs can offer in the 1st year: • Access to showcase events at Hub School • Support writing a phonics action plan • A full audit of phonics in their school • Funding to buy resources and/or training • 6 day package of support delivered by a literacy specialist from September 2019

  8. What will the funding looklike per hub? • Financial support for up to 85 schools to buy resources to attend showcase events. • Financial support for up to 40 schools to engage in a 3 day phonics audit • Financial support to buy resources to support the teaching of phonics either: Match funded by schools (with a cap of £3,000 per school) Or If schools meet 2 of the following criteria, the hub has discretion to offer outright funding at a cap of £6,000 per school: • Phonics Screening Check score below the national average; • Ofsted Requires Improvement or Inadequate • Above average numbers of pupils eligible for Pupil Premium; • The school is in an Opportunity Area
