  1. Mass Casualty Events Richard Rackham Assistant Director Governance and Resilience NHS Blood and Transplant

  2. Recent History London 2005 – London Olympics 2012 Charlie Hebdo Brussels bombing Paris shooting – changed the paradigm

  3. What was the Paradigm? The planned volume of the principle blood products required for each triage category ATD is adult therapeutic dose (1 ATD=4 buffy coats). Pool is equivalent to 5 single units. Glasgow et al (2014) Going for gold: blood planning for the London 2012 Olympic Games Transfusion Medicine, 2014, 24, 145–153

  4. What is the new paradigm?

  5. NHSBT’s plans NHSBT’s main resilience is in stock Red cell target is five days of stock by group Plasma is 20 days of stock (84 for paed) Cryo is 40 days of stock (84 for paed) Some resilience in activity Plans for whole blood donors including extra sessions Plans for bleeding into specific pack types

  6. Current stock

  7. Potential problems Stock is distributed between 15 centres Capacity to manufacture is limited Transportation Lock down

  8. Implications of Lockdown Lockdown is the process of controlling the movement and access, both entry and exit of people (NHS staff, patients and visitors) around a trust site or other specific trust building/area in response to an identified risk, threat or hazard that might impact upon the security of patients, staff and assets or, indeed, the capacity of that facility to continue to operate. • Controlled access and egress • Latest guidance 2009 • No guidance on controlling access • No guidance on deliveries – of goods or patients!

  9. Whose lockdown is it? Has your lockdown been exercised? Were you involved? Did you involve NHSBT?

  10. We want to work with you If you hold an exercise we will endeavour to field an attendee If you want advice on questions to ask you Emergency Planner, we can discuss this with you.
