Directing concepts Chekhov play projects
Two types of directors • Interpretive directors attempt to translate the play as they think the playwright would want it to be. • Traditional or classic interpretation • Creative Directors create “concept productions” based on their unique ideas or interpretations of a play script • More Liberal or creative or free interpretation • Think Shakespeare, Greek Tragedies, fairy tales
What is a directing concept • Production Concept • The primary metaphor, symbol, or concept that is essential to the production of this play • Production concept is : Brief description of the world of the play as you are going to produce it. • Interpretational focus - What will be emphasized or highlighted? • What are the choices of style for the production? Completes sentences like • – “The play will be set in _______ because ____”, • – “I see the play as being about _______ because”
Assignment: • Take the play your monologue is from. If you were going to direct this play and had an unlimited budge, how would you do it? • Where would you stage it? In a theatre? Outside? If an old abandoned warehouse? Or on a farm? • When would you set it? Traditional time period? Contemporary? Post Apocalyptic? • What design choices would you make about costumes, sets, lights, etc.? • Create a powerpoint or prezi presentation detailing your choices, we will share these in class.
Example • I want to set Uncle Vanya in contemporary America during the great recession in 2008. • The family enjoyed wealth and prosperity but lost it all in the collapse of the financial system • The setting is a Manhattan penthouse that is falling down and decaying. The house represents the former grandeur of the family and it steadily decays as the play progresses and the characters resign themselves to their lot in life, and their wasted possibility.
Costume design for ‘YELENA’ All of the costumes and sets will be shades of black and white. Yelena’s costume offers style and sophistication.
Set inspiration The sets would be cold looking and decaying, In a proscenium style theatre. To allow a sense of slow decline.
Lights “That our world is worsened not by fires, or robbers… but you understand? By hate.. And your job should be to be strong and not to carp at those around you. Not to grumble, but, simply to reconcile… to make peace…” Yelena Act 3
