Types of Computers • Personal Computer – Designed to be used by 1 person at a time • Types of Personal Computers or PC’s include • Laptops • Desktops • Tablets
Servers • A server is a computer dedicated to providing one or more services to other computers or devices on a network • A server can support from two to several thousand connected computers at the same time
Mobile and Game Devices • Mobile Devices – Small enough to hold in your hand • Smartphone – An Internet capable phone that usually has a touch screen and .
Digital Cameras • Digital Camera – is a device that allows you to take photos and store the images digitally. • Most Smart phones now have digital cameras
Portable Media Players • Sometimes called a personal media player • Is a mobile device on which you can store, organize and play or view digital media • Digital media includes Music, Photos and Videos
E-Book Readers • E-Book reader – Short for Electronic Book reader • Is a mobile device that is used primarily for reading e-books • An E-Book is an electronic version of a printed book, readable on computers and other digital devices
Game Devices • A Game Console is a mobile computing device designed for video games. • They are often connected to a television and many are internet capable
Input Devices • An Input Device is any Hardware component that allows you to enter data and instructions into a computer or mobile device.
Keyboards • A device that contains keys you press to enter data and instructions into a computer. • We use a QWERTY keyboard in this class. It is the most common type of keyboard
Pointing Devices • A pointing device is an input device that allows a user to control a small symbol on a screen called a pointer • A Mouse is a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand • A Touchpad is a small flat rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion
Voice and Video Input • Some Devices enable you to speak instructions using voice input. • A microphone is an input device that enables you to speak into a computer or mobile device • Scanners are light sensing input devices that converts printed text and images into a form the computer can process
Output Devices • An Output device is any hardware that conveys information from a computer or mobile device to one or more people • Printers are output devices that produce Text and Graphics on a Physical Medium such as Paper • Displays are output devices that visually conveys text, graphics and video information. • Speakers allow you to hear audio (Music, Voice and other sounds)
Input and Output Devices • A computer monitor or screen can be both an input and an output device if it has touch screen capabilities.
Memory and Storage • Memory consists of electronic components that store instructions, information or data temporarily. • Storage by contrasts holds data, instructions and information for future use.
Storage Devices • A Storage Device records(writes) and/or retrieves(reads) items to and from storage media • Hard Disks – A hard disk is a storage device that contains one or more inflexible, circular platters that use magnetic particles to store data instructions and information. . The entire device is sealed in an air tight case to protect it.
Storage Devices • Solid State Drives uses flash memory to store data, instructions and information. This contains no moving parts • USB Flash Drives are portable memory storage devices that you plug in to a USB port. The are convenient for mobile users because they are small and portable. • Memory Cards is a removable flash memory usually no bigger than 1.5 inches in height • Optical Disks are storage media that consists of flat round discs made of metal. CD’s and DVD’s
Cloud Storage • An Internet or Online Storage service that provides storage to computer users.
Internet • The internet is the worlds largest computer network. • It is a world wide collection of computer networks that connects billions of people • A network is a set of connected computers • The World Wide Web is a global library of information available to anyone connected to the internet • A webpage is a electronic document that can contain text, graphics, audio and video
Web Browsing • A browser is software that enables users with an internet connection to access and view web pages. • Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome are all examples of Web Browsers
Web Searching • A primary reason people use the web and it’s original use; is to search for specific information. • A search engine is software that finds websites, web pages, images, video’s, news, maps and other specific information related to a topic • Google, Ask.com, Bing and Yahoo search, are all examples of search engines.
Online Social Networks • Social Networks are websites that encourage its members to share their interests, ideas, stories, photos, music, and videos with other users. • Examples include Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Instagram.
Digital Security and Safety • Malware(short for malicious software) acts without a user’s knowledge and deliberately alters the device’s operations. • Examples include Viruses, worms, Trojan horses, rootkits, spyware, adware and zombies.
Privacy • Nearly every life event is stored on a computer somewhere. • Protect yourself and your loved ones by being cautious in email messages and on websites • Do not share personal information • Common Sense is your best Defense
Software • Software or Programs are a series of instructions organized in order to tell a computer what tasks to perform. • Operating Systems are a set of programs that coordinate all the activities among a devices hardware. It provides a way for users to communicate with the device and other software. (Examples include Windows, Apple’s Mac OS, Google’s Android. • Applications or App’s are programs designed to make users more productive.
Networks • A Network is a collection of computers and devices connected together, often wirelessly. • Networks allow computers to Share resources • Examples include Home and Business networks
