Task: Your perception of you • Choose a different picture that resonates with you as a: • Learner • In groups of 3 discuss your 3 choices • Have you chosen similar or very different pictures? • Why did you choose your picture? • Do you have diverse perspectives / experiences? • What might this tell you about learner diversity?
Task: Group discussion • In groups take 5 minutes to think about and discuss: • Other elements of diversity in the student community • The challenges for you and L&T of such diversity • Inclusive Curriculum Project Guides on Geography Discipline Network: http://www2.glos.ac.uk/gdn/icp/gdlist.htm
Benefits Most of the challenges can be turned into benefits! Enriching the learning experience How can we do that??
8 principals of inclusivity • Philosophy: Concepts of inclusion • Purposeful: Understand rationales • Proactive: Identify challenges and solutions • Partnership: Consultation and negotiation • Process: Recognising inclusion takes time • Policy: Commitment and support • Pedagogy: Teaching, learning and administration • Practice: Making a difference
Facilitation of learning • Importance of induction • Encourage students to work together to get to know each other • Treat students as individuals not as representatives of a particular group • Provide variety and choice where possible • Promote dialogue, debate and discussion
Facilitating Learning cont. • Setting up the room • Having active learning in your session • Being aware of students who are quieter / dominant • Think about where you stand, how you dress • Think about inclusive practice – benefits all students • Inclusive curriculum design in HE: Considerations for effective practice across and within subject areas (2011) Hannah Morgan and Ann-Marie Houghton http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/assets/documents/inclusion/disability/ICD_introduction.pdf
