Population • Egypt is Africa’s third most populous nation after Nigeria and Ethiopia. • About half of the population live in the cities with the remainder clustered around the river Nile. • Egypt has a significant influence culturally, politically and militarily in the Middle East, North Africa and on the whole Muslim world.
90% Islamic – mainly Sunni • 9% Coptic Christian • 1% Christian
Recent history • 1 February 2011, Mubarak resigned and fled Cairo. • Mohamed Morsi was elected president on 24 June 2012. The new government was dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood. • On 3 July 2013, the military removed Morsi from power in a coup d'état and installed an interim government.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a commemoration of the ancient Library of Alexandria in Egypt's second largest city. Alexandria has had an important place in the history of the church. There is a strong tradition that Mark the writer of the second Gospel founded the first church there. An important type of New Testament manuscript is associated with Alexandria
Pray for Egypt • Pray that the political turmoil in Egypt will not spiral into a bloody civil war. • Pray for restraint on all especially for hardlineMuslims who are enraged at the removal of the Muslim Brotherhood from power. • Pray for Christians who are an easy target for angry Muslim groups. • Pray for the growth of the evangelical church in Egypt and that Egyptian evangelicals will be emboldened to share their faith. • Pray for the Reformed community in Egypt it is not only the largest Bible-believing community in the entire Mediterranean region, but also plays an active role in evangelism, church planting and teaching throughout the Arabic speaking world. He will send Egypt a Saviour and a Mighty One and He will deliver them. Then the Lord will be known to Egypt and the Egyptians will know the LORD in that day. (Isaiah 19:20)
