Emotional Development • The process of learning to recognize and express one’s feelings and to establish one’s identity as a unique person. • Healthy development = adult with self-confidence, who can handle stress, shows empathy toward others.
Social development • The process of learning to interact with others and to express oneself to others. • Healthy development = adult with tolerance for others, who can communicate well and listen to others points of view before acting.
Emotional-Social Development • Connected to each other • Child’s feelings about himself/herself and behavior toward others depend on one another. • Begin at birth and continue throughout life • Many influences shape the development • Bond between child and parent • Atmosphere of the home • Temperament of the child
Attachment • A bond between a parent or caregiver and the child. • Babies need physical contact – holding, cuddling, rocking and being near a person • Famous studies – Harlow study
Babies who don’t receive care • Research has shown babies who are abused or neglected (fail to receive love, touch, and opportunities for learning) had brains 20-30% smaller than average • Result = Failure to Thrive • Condition in which the baby does not grow and develop properly • Not helped – become unattached • Helped – trust the world, growing attachment
Emotional Climate of Home • Smile – someone smiles back • Parent/caregiver emotions affect the baby’s mood and feelings • Up and down – unstable • Tense – baby becomes fussy and tense
Temperament • Style of reacting to the world and relating to others • Researchers have 9 different ways of looking at temperament • High and low – greater or lesser amount of that trait • Person looked at as all of the traits together
9 Areas of Temperament • Intensity – Strength of emotional responses to events • Persistence – Determination to complete an action • Sensitivity – Strength of reactions to feelings (comfort, food, etc.) • Perceptiveness – Awareness of surroundings • Adaptability – Ease of adjustment to change
Temperament continued • Regularity – Tendency to follow routines/patterns • Energy – Level of physical activity • First reaction – Ways of facing new situations • Mood – Typical mood – cranky, happy
Let’s Review! • What are the 3 influences on emotional and social development? • What is temperament? • How does the environment the parent’s create affect their baby?
