  3. Produce • Resources- natural gas (helium), rich soils, and petroleum • Farmers- underground water, state’s top producer of wheat, cotton and sorghum • Cattle ranching important • Half of world’s mohair (hair of angora goats) is found here • Oil in Permian Basin

  4. Major Cities • Amarillo • Thennear new railroad but become booming cattle market • Amarillo means yellow • After yellow colored soil & wildflowers • Lubbock • Then the hub of the plains grew after the Santa Fe railroad built its line through this town • Midland and Odessa • Known for large oil and gas industries

  5. Landmarks • Palo Duro Canyon • Second largest canyon after the grand canyon • 100 miles long and 6 miles wide • Caprock Escarpment • Steep slops or cliffs that separates the Great Plains from the Central Plains
