TRC Mini-Grant 2002 Dell PowerEdge 2500 Server
Project Goals • Provide CS students with exposure to Linux (Unix) computing environment in CS courses • Provide new opportunities for independent studies based on state of the art hardware and software • Provide resources for CS research
2 Pentium III 1Ghz CPUs 512MB SDRAM 1 18GB SCSI DISK 1 36GB SCSI DISK 24X CD-ROM Floppy Disk Drive 20/40GB Tape Backup Red Hat Linux 7.2 Operating System Dell PowerEdge 2500 Server
Total cost $$3555 • TRC MiniGrant $2955 • CASPS Dean’s Fune $ 200 • Math/Computer Science $ 400 • System Installation, Configuration, Administration provide by CS Faculty
Linux • Popular version of Unix that runs on PCs and other hardware platforms • Used for a significant number of Web servers around the world
Accomplishments to date • Used by CS345 Operating Systems students • Used for an independent study • Used by CS227 Computer Networks students
CS345 Operating Systems • Learned basic and advance Linux user skills • Learned thread programming as used in servers • Learned shell script programming
Independent Study • Learned Linux installation, configuration and administration • Investigated alternative GUIs • Explored security issues • Learned how to configure • Firewall • SSH (Secure shell)
Access Control: The Firewall hacker access denied access denied hacker login successful valid user with name and password
Why NOT To Use Telnet or FTP User:gail, password:x2cat$f user, attempting to log on server hacker eyeing the network can “see” user name & password
Remote login using SSH o%W8H)#02m19cSr user, attempting to log on server hacker eyeing the network can’t understand the ciphertext
CS227 Computer Networks • Used as a server to respond to network queries • Used as a software repository to facilitate network installations Server Network
The Future • Server side programming – CS330 • Advanced system administration and configuration • Security research • Development of Linux based security labs for CS327
Integration into other CS courses • Use for development and offering of new Web technologies course • Use in CS courses supporting IT major • Use in courses supporting MIS major
