The origins of fairy tales • Fairy tales exist in a range of different cultures • Different cultures often have slightly different versions of the same fairytale • Fairy tales began as oral stories which were passed down through generations. We don’t know who originally wrote them
origins (cont) • Even famous fairytale writers such as Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm didn’t write many original stories; they just wrote down their version of the oral stories they had been told.
Fairy tale conventions • Traditional fairytales tend to have some very similar features in terms of plot, setting and character ideas • This is because fairy tales were originally used to teach children important moral lessons • The following slides will identify some of these features or conventions for you.
Use of set phrases • Once upon a time… • In a faraway land… • And they all lived happily ever after • Long ago…
settings • A cottage • Wood/forest • Castle • Garden • Dungeon • cave
Good female character • A princess • A beautiful but hard-done-to young woman • Usually need to be saved or rescued by…
Good male character • A handsome prince • A poor but clever young man who is rewarded for saving the princess by becoming a prince/ marrying the princess
Evil female character • A witch • A wicked stepmother • An evil fairy • An ugly old woman • Usually the person who tricks/puts the good characters in danger
Magic (can be good or bad) • 3 wishes • A magic kiss • Talking/ helpful animals • A spell or curse • Giants and monsters • Fairy godmothers • witches
Features of the writing style • Fairytales are usually written in the 3rd person • They contain sentences that begin with adverbs, eg: Suddenly, Cinderella noticed it was midnight
Features of the plot • There will be a problem at the start of the story that will build to a crisis. • The crisis will be solved after many trials • Tests and trials usually occur in groups of three • Characters make good and bad choices and they learn from them to become better people • Good people end up happy and bad people end up unhappy
Final note • Not all fairy tales will contain all of these features • A story can be considered a fairy tale if it contains a selection of these features • Many modern fairy tales use the conventions of the traditional tales eg: Shrek, Enchanted
